Back in 2019, I wrote an Instagram post on the concept of ZeroWaste Privilege – it was based on a checklist a fellow instagram profile had created. Welp I just want to remind folks that we also have privileges aligned with our capability to take plastic-free actions.
Privilege is defined as – “A special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.”
Advocates for plastic-free living, this includes me, have to be mindful of individuals privileges when we are encouraging people to reduce their plastic usage. Some biggies to consider
- Access to safe drinking tap water
- Health and movement abilities
- Choice of where reside
- Access to a detailed recycling service
- Time and finances to invest in making life changes
- Acceptance of plastic related policies
I also feel that advocates can utilize their own privileges as an activism opportunity. For example if you have extra garden harvest share that with those with limited access to healthy food. Or if you have some extra funds buy someone a non-plastic alternative product or beneficial book.
Finally, I think everyone should be cognizant of their own privileges to prevent being judgmental or hypocritical.
What’s your thoughts on plastic privilege?
