Today’s Food Waste Friday is a spotlight on @reduction_raider1 (Instagram) – writer + frugal foodie. The following are the responses to my food waste questions.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A: A fully fledged, frugal foodie, passionate about avoiding food waste. When not loitering in supermarket reduction aisles, she blogs about eating well for less and writes a monthly food waste column for Be Kind magazine.
Q: What are your thoughts on our current food waste situation?
A: It’s really upsetting to witness; food is our life line, a shared need, and connects us all. Food waste and food poverty exist are a global issue and actually something that we can immediately do something about on a personal to corporate level. So much has become disposable that it’s almost as if we’ve lost sight that food keeps us and others alive.
Q: What role do you believe you play in reducing people’s food waste?
A: I blog, write about food waste and showcase with my Instagram how easy it is to eat well for less, steps we can take to waste less, the power of food sharing. I’m a reformed can’t cook, won’t cook and have lived off reduced and free food when an omnivore, pescatarian, vegetarian, vegan so hope that others can relate and feel inspired to make small changes.
Q: What do you suggest is the easiest action a person can make when i comes to reducing their food waste?
A: Start at home and shop from your cupboards. Make use of what you already have, don’t be afraid to substitute recipes with what you have rather than going out to buy more whilst what you have is not being used/eaten. Experimenting with what you already have can mean interesting, new, meals, saving money, lessening waste without even stepping out of the door.
